About this deal

Benylin mucus cough & cold all-in-one relief tablets contain the painkiller paracetamol (250mg), a cough expectorant called guaifenesin (100mg) and a decongestant called phenylephrine hydrochloride (5mg). These three active ingredients have different actions to relieve your symptoms.

Store this medication at room temperature, protect it from light and moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children. This medicine contains less than 1 mmol sodium (23mg) per dose, which is to say essentially 'sodium-free' If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicineReporting suspected adverse reactions after authorisation of the medicinal product is important. It allows continued monitoring of the benefit/risk balance of the medicinal product. Healthcare professionals are asked to report any suspected adverse reactions via the Yellow Card Scheme at www.mhra.gov.uk/yellowcard or search for 'MHRA Yellow Card' in the Google Play or Apple App Store. If you take Benylin mucus cough & cold all-in-one relief in the hour before or the six hours after taking colestyramine, the paracetamol is likely to be less effective. This is because colestyramine reduces the absorption of paracetamol from the gut.

This medicine contains less than 1 mmol sodium (23 mg) per dose, that is to say essentially 'sodium-free'. The active ingredients per 20ml are: paracetamol 1000mg, phenylephrine hydrochloride 12.18mg, guaifenesin 200mg, cetylpyridinium chloride 3mg If you're taking medicines for high blood pressure you shouldn't take Benylin mucus cough & cold all-in-one relief, because the decongestant may make your blood pressure medicine less effective. Treatment with activated charcoal should be considered if the overdose has been taken within 1 hour. Plasma paracetamol concentration should be measured at 4 hours or later after ingestion (earlier concentrations are unreliable). Treatment with N-acetylcysteine may be used up to 24 hours after ingestion of paracetamol, however, the maximum protective effect is obtained up to 8 hours post-ingestion. The effectiveness of the antidote declines sharply after this time. If required, the patient should be given intravenous N-acetylcysteine, in line with the established dosage schedule. If vomiting is not a problem, oral methionine may be a suitable alternative for remote areas, outside hospital. Management of patients who present with serious hepatic dysfunction beyond 24 hours from ingestion should be discussed with the NPIS or a liver unit. Expectorants such as guaifenesin are used to treat a productive, chesty or mucus cough, where you cough up phlegm. Guaifenesin helps to thin and loosen the mucus in the airways, making it easier to cough up.Do not take with other cold or decongestant medicines or any other paracetamol-containing products. Concomitant use of phenylephrine with other sympathomimetic amines can increase the risk of cardiovascular side effects. Co-administration with medicines containing e.g. propylene glycol or ethanol may lead to accumulation of ethanol and induce adverse effects, in particular in young children with low or immature metabolic capacity. The side effects listed below are not experienced by everyone who takes this medication. If you are concerned about side effects, discuss the risks and benefits of this medication with your doctor. Don't take Benylin mucus cough & cold all-in-one relief if you have taken a type of medicine called a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) in the last 14 days. MAOIs include the antidepressants phenelzine, tranylcypromine, isocarboxazid and moclobemide, and the anti-Parkinson's medicines selegiline, safinamide and rasagiline. This is because the combination of phenylephrine with these medicines could cause a dangerous increase in blood pressure (hypertensive crisis).

The antidiabetic medicines exenatide, lixisenatide and liraglutide may slow down the absorption of paracetamol into the bloodstream, so it might take longer to work if you're using one of these medicines to treat your diabetes. Ask your pharmacist for more advice. Medications other than those listed above may interact with this medication.Tell your doctor or prescriber about all prescription, over-the-counter (non-prescription), and herbal medications you are taking. Also tell them about any supplements you take. Since caffeine, alcohol, the nicotine from cigarettes, or street drugs can affect the action of many medications, you should let your prescriber know if you use them. Paracetamol is thought to relieve pain by reducing the production of prostaglandins in the brain and spinal cord. It works to bring down a fever by affecting an area of the brain that regulates our body temperature (the hypothalamic heat-regulating center). This stops you feeling hot or shivery. The speed of absorption of paracetamol may be increased by metoclopramide or domperidone; and absorption reduced by colestyramine. The anti-coagulant effect of warfarin and other coumarins may be enhanced by prolonged regular use of paracetamol with increased risk of bleeding; occasional doses have no significant effect. Alcohol may potentiate the hepatotoxicity of paracetamol. Contains paracetamol. Do not take anything else containing paracetamol whilst taking this medicine. Do not take more medicine than the label tells you to. Talk to a doctor at once if you take too much of this medicine, even if you feel well. If you do not get better, talk to your doctor.

With phenylephrine there is a possibility that an increased risk of arrhythmias may occur in patients receiving cardiac glycosides or tri-cyclic anti-depressants. Phenylephrine interacts with monoamine oxidase inhibitors; it should not therefore, be taken by patients receiving monoamine oxidase inhibitors or within 14 days of stopping such medication. Pregnant or breastfeeding: Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant. If you use it when breastfeeding, some drugs in this medicine will be present, in small amounts, in your milk. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice if you might be pregnant or are breastfeeding Women who are breastfeeding. (It's not known if phenylephrine passes into breast milk, or its effect on a nursing infant. When taken by mouth, decongestants such as phenylephrine can also temporarily decrease the production of breast milk with just one or two doses. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for further advice.)Phenylephrine overdosage is likely to result in effects similar to those listed under advserse reactions. Additional symptoms may include hypertension and possibly reflux bradycardia. In severe cases confusion, hallucinations, seizures and arrythmias may occir. However the amount required to produce serious phenylephrine toxicity would be greater than required to cause paracetamol-related toxicity. Breast-feeding:It is not known if dextromethorphan passes into breast milk. If you are a breast-feeding mother and are taking this medication, it may affect your baby. Talk to your doctor about whether you should continue breast-feeding.
