Madness have a new record, their 13th, and first in seven years: Theatre of the Absurd Presents C’est La Vie. Where did Madness get their band name?

During 1979, the band began to attract a live following in London, being regulars at the Dublin Castle in Camden Town. [12] The band's first commercial recording was the Lee Thompson composition " The Prince". [11] The song, like the band's name, paid homage to their idol, Prince Buster. The song was released through 2 Tone Records, the label of the Specials founder and keyboardist Jerry Dammers. [11] The song was a surprise hit, peaking in the UK music charts at number 16. [11] Madness toured with fellow 2 Tone bands the Specials and the Selecter, before recording their debut studio album. In late 2010, the band collaborated in the Cage Against the Machine project, in which numerous artists performed John Cage's 4′33″ for a charity single intended to prevent the winner of The X Factor claiming the Christmas Number 1. The title refers to the previous year's successful campaign to get Rage Against the Machine's " Killing in the Name" to chart above X Factor winner Joe McElderry.

The lineup of the band was in constant flux, and they were joined by Suggs (Graham McPherson), Woody (Daniel Woodgate) and Bedders (Mark Bedford). It’s for another reason, though, that the timing of the re-release is particularly poignant. Hall died last December of pancreatic cancer aged 63. Panter feels “uncomfortable” when I suggest that Dance Craze stands as a fitting tribute to him. “It makes me feel a bit uneasy to use that as a selling point,” he tells me.
