About this deal

Having been put out a little by Ch4's decision to drop their HD offering from Freesat I was tempted to try Freeview again. The last time I used a Freeview PVR was when weak digital signals were still run alongside analogue and HD was unheard of. Having bought new TVs with Freeview HD built-in, seeing how good the signal now is and after a review of this forum and a few queries I decided to give the FVP-5000T a try.

The discontinuation of the Humax FVP-5000T marks the end of an era for a device that was once a go-to choice for Freeview recording. The launch video for CORSAIR iCUE LC100 Case Accent Lighting Panels can be found at the link below: Away from the video side, the hi-res audio support is a welcome addition. It means those connecting the Aura to a decent external speaker system can get a strong performance from locally stored or streamed audio files, even if connecting through the HDMI, which can handle up to 24-bit/192 kHz levels. The service promises to provide millions of homes with easy access to live TV channels and on-demand content, all streamed directly to their Smart TVs (it’s still unknown whether Freely will support other streaming devices as an app). Another cool place where this integration is evident is when you’re watching a live show that’s also available via a streaming app. So for example, I’ll stumble across Doctor Who20 minutes after it had started – and the FVP-5000T will offer to start the show from the beginning – by loading it up directly from BBC iPlayer.

The device was an early adopter of Freeview Play, seamlessly integrating live TV with catch-up and on-demand services. Channel changing is near instant if you simply tap in the channel number you want, (Same works in the epg to skip to a channel you want to see the epg at the curent time)

You can also set different fan curves to different component temps. I set up the top fan to adjust its RPM based on CPU temp, which should help out a little with keeping the VRM cool under load. Then I set the two lower fans to speed up in line with GPU temp, so as to keep it fed with fresh air when I'm gaming. You'll probably want to tweak the CPU and GPU fan curves a little just to keep things quite and generally in line with one another, but it's a fairly simply process in iCUE. That said, if you're not a fan of iCUE or don't want to use any such software on your machine, the 5000T probably isn't the case for you. This is a case that's pretty much dependent on its software. The RGB LED strips, fan lighting, and fan speeds are all adjusted via the Commander Core XT, and that's plugged right into the iCUE software as first port of call. But if you’re an avid Freeview watcher, this box will give you an upgraded experience. You might even stop paying Netflix and the other paid streaming services – Freeview has a lot of good content (though not all of it is in HD), and with the FVP-5000T’s smart recording features, it’s very easy to find and watch at your convenience. Freely is being positioned as the streaming successor to Freeview and Freesat, although these traditional platforms will continue to function alongside Freely – at least for a time.
