About this deal

I wasn't originally sure why they included some of the special issues, written by Not Mark Waid, in the Mark Waid Flash collection. He still lives in Barry’s shadow and thinks about him constantly, as do the villains that fought the former Flash. We also see more of Jay Garrick and the beginning of the Flash Family that would soon grow in the upcoming months. In December 2021, it was announced that Waid would be writing a new ongoing for DC entitled Batman/Superman: World's Finest, with Dan Mora serving as artist and beginning publication in March 2022. There were parts that were a little confusing--probably because I haven't read EVERYTHING that precedes these stories, and also probably because I used the hoopla app and read this on my phone, rather than having the physical book (and therein the full pages) in my hands to reference--but these stories were all what you expect from comic books: solid action, fun characters, and the best what-if scenarios that anyone could imagine.

The specials and annuals are so different in style that they affect the overall enjoyment of the collection. In November 2012, Waid and artist Leinil Francis Yu launched The Indestructible Hulk series for Marvel. In this first volume of a new series, Young Wally West is quickly in danger—not only from The Flash’s enemies, but from powers that he doesn’t know how to control! Born in Hueytown, Alabama, Mark Waid has earned his living as a lounge singer, a magician, a disc jockey, an accountant and in many other ways, but none of them as eclectic--or fun--as scripting comic books. And racing to Keystone City straight from the future, it’s Impulse, the latest member of The Flash’s super-speed family! The second is a six-issue miniseries entitled World's Finest: Teen Titans, illustrated by Emanuela Lupacchino.

Should I just wait till September for Waids run to come out, or is a better alternative to read Johns Vol. Ultimately, it would be Waid's take on the Flash legacy and the Flash mythology that would make his run so great, but there was also a silver-age optimism matched with solid modern writing, and that's already on display here.Thing is I've been a fan of animated Flash (Wally West) from DCAU and the animaed movies and I want the Flash that is most like the animated version. Waid was expanding a universe and building on his stories without feeling the need to telegraph every plot point. It’s funny because I love Pacheco’s later work on titles like Avengers Forever and X-Men, but here he is still rough around the edges. Mark Waid tells Superman: Birthright spiritual sequel and flashes back to the original Teen Titans in new DC titles". Following that arc we see Flash getting sued by someone that he failed to save because he was to busy "grandstanding" as his accuser said to him.
