About this deal

When medical student Nelson Wright creates an experiment to find out what happens when you die, he convinces a group of his fellow students to aid him in his dangerous experiment. Joel Schumacher’s Flatliners receives a new 4K UHD Blu-ray edition from Arrow Video and is delivered in the aspect ratio of 2.

After a somewhat rough start during the opening credit sequence, the cult psychological horror flick is resuscitated for Ultra HD with a highly-attractive HEVC H. The review copy sent to EoM is not the retail edition, so there’s no way to speak on the booklet or art with any kind of authority. Julia Roberts ( Sleeping with the Enemy) is actually quite good as Rachel, the most emotional of the group, not because she's a “pretty woman”, but because her participation has an ulterior motive that grounds her in reality. The location where the flatliners conduct their dangerous experiment also accentuates the questions they are trying to answer.Howard says scoring films came naturally to him and talks about his writing process building emotion through tone and themes. He laments a little on how he felt that the photographic process couldn't even properly capture how he wanted the colours to look, leading him to praise this new restoration and its application of HDR, stating this is how the film should have always looked. The script deals with guilt, regret, atonement and redemption, themes missing from many of its horror brethren. It’s nice to hear some critics discuss a movie that’s a few decades old as they discuss things about the cast, the long-lasting impact of this film and much more. As it turns out, each member of the clan goes beyond the grave and each brings back their own personal demons that they must find a way to conquer.

Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin and Oliver Platt as aspiring yet daring medical students commiting reckless experiments with death create likable, fairly three-dimensional characters in what essentially amounts to B-grade material with no apparent condescension or irony. Hereafter is new video interview with first assistant director John Kretchmer that runs four fourteen minutes and covers his entry into the business and his collaborations with Schumacher on this picture. It’s also interesting that the film doesn’t really make a firm stance on what’s happening when these people die. the like, and it maybe has a slightly more "video" like quality in this 4K UHD version, though detail levels are still excellent. The material on this site may not be reproduced, distributed, transmitted, cached or otherwise used except with the prior written permission of The Digital Bits, Inc.Though its flaws can sometimes be obvious, the storyline is decent enough to keep us involved and there is some suspense here even if it all falls apart in the end. Similar to the other supernatural-based films of the era, it had an aggressive visual style—one might say even more so with bolder saturation choices and extravagant set design, thanks to director of photography Jan de Bont and production designer Eugenio Zanetti. Directed by Joel Schumacher in 1990, Flatliners follows five students enrolled in medical school: Nelson (Kiefer Sutherland), Doctor Rachel McMannus (Julia Roberts), David Labraccio (Kevin Bacon), Doctor Joe Hurley (William Baldwin), and Randy Steckle (Oliver Platt). Detail has been cleaned up, colors seem to have a bit more pop and the dark levels (lest we forget, this is a pretty dark film) seem a lot better balanced. Bringing back someone from the brink of death to discover what lies on the other side is something that doctors, philosophers and many religions wonder about.
