Description

With any laptop drive, power consumption is an important factor for users. The key sources of power draw get narrowed down to either the bright screen or the storage device used. In the next test, we record the average power consumed over a small range of synthetic benchmarks. For reference, Seagate lists an average idle power rate of 0.9 watts and an active seek rate of 2.5 watts. Introduction and Product Impressions

Similar to the previous iterations in the bus-powered My Passport line, the 2019 My Passport 5TB also uses a 5400 RPM drive internally. Based on WD's naming convention for internal drives, it can be seen that the WD50NDZW corresponds to a 5TB 2.5" drive with a 15mm z-height. It has SED (hardware encryption) capabilities. The 5400 RPM disk has a 128MB cache and the board has an integrated USB 3.0 bridge chip leading to a Micro-B interface. All 2-6TB external drives - Elements, My Book, Easystore, etc. Precise models vary and are not guaranteed; assume SMR in capacities below 8TB. Seagate’s third generation SSHDs (solid state hybrid drives), now for both laptops and desktops, are marketed as a replacement for HDDs and serve as a good option for those otherwise considering an SSD. SSHDs aim to offer users the price-point and robust capacity of HDDs while also utilizing NAND flash to provide the performance attained with SSDs by caching critical applications. Slimmed from 9.5mm to 7mm, our review model third generation Seagate 500GB SSHD Thin with 8GB of MLC NAND would fit well in any user configuration and is especially well-suited for ultra-thin, ultra-light laptops. Note that ZFS code to use HA-SMR does not appear to exist. Without that code, a HA-SMR drive behaves like a DM-SMR drive where ZFS is concerned.

Cost-conscious consumers with bulk storage requirements need to rely on hard drives. On the portable front, HDD vendors have been using 2.5" drives in external bus-powered enclosures to serve the market. Seagate was the first vendor to put out a 5TB portable bus-powered drive, and Western Digital recently introduced a slew of 5TB models of their own. Similar to Seagate, Western Digital has also adopted SMR platters for their portable hard drives over the last couple of generations. Western Digital sent across a review sample of the 5TB My Passport Portable External Hard Drive recently. MTC takes your PC to new performance levels, so you can load applications and files faster than ever before. By applying intelligent layers of NAND Flash, DRAM and media cache technologies, BarraCuda delivers improved read and write performance by optimising data flow. Looking from the front you can see the standard SATA power and data interface, as well as admire the thin 7mm form-factor. This design allows it to fit in more systems, including ultrathin notebooks.
