Filmaffinity - Movieaffinity | Filmaffinity is a movie recommendation site based on the concept of Movie Soulmates. A hitchhiker becomes a murder suspect after he accepts a ride from a person who kills a blackmailer. The print is reasonable, despite some scratching and the occasional bleaching that seems to be a feature of Renown releases.

William Sylvester plays the hitcher-cum-sleuth well and Denis Shaw is good as they nosey butler in this short-but-sweet double-crossing pot-boiler that do. There is much intrigue and some witty dialogue to be enjoyed in this early fifties B-film, which reveals its small budget with its studio-bound setting and recycled score (at one point, it sounded like something from a Norman Wisdom film! She insists on meeting the blackmailer so travels to his remote country house; en route picking up a curious hitcher. It's a tongue-in-cheek affair, which we thought worked well, except for a Bugsy Malone style performance from American Reed DeRouen.Less complicated than Agatha Christie and is a lighthearted contrast with the depressing films noirs of the same period. A MATTER OF MURDER (1949) - there are no cast or crew credits on this poor old remnant of a film, but it's efficiently directed by John Gilling, who later went on to better things like the TV series, The Saint, and Hammer Horrors. If you have any information regarding this production, the locations or, even better, some comparison shots please contact us. Mary Germaine is great though, and there are some attempts at lightness of touch which raises this above the average B potboiler of the time.

Mary Germaine is tough but warm and attractive, and the other two actresses are also very engaging, particularly gorgeous Patricia Owens, who sadly has only a small part as a model in this, but went on to better things in the US.

Four stars for this one, although I found it cosy rather than scarey, right down to the music - pure 1950s BBC Home Service! The story follows a soldier, Jimmy (Sylvester), and his girlfriend Carol (Mary Germaine) who are implicated in the murder of blackmailer Markham (Alexander Gauge) at his isolated mansion. We enjoyed it from a film history point of view, and sat through until the end, despite a terrible print and even worse sound quality. The investigation reveals numerous possible suspects leading the couple to try and find the real killer themselves.

I know I recently said this about a previous film I watched but this is very Edgar Wallace, Maybe I only feel that way because I've been reading him lately but then again his impact on mysteries and thriller since the 20s is not only undeniable but prodigious. Upper Court, Portsmouth Road, Esher in Surrey which also appears in 'Man at the Carlton Tower', 'Game for Three Losers', 'A Place of One's Own' and 'Hell is Sold Out'. After some sparring from Jimmy, Carol agrees to pay the money, but is unable to withdraw it from her bank until morning. In a remote mansion Army Officer (William Sylvester) and Carol (Mary Germaine) only escape the charge of murder by finding the real killer.
